How to Open a Word Document in Apple Pages
Apple Pages can import Word files (.docx and .doc) directly. This website does not generate an Pages document. Open the original in Pages, review any compatibility warnings, then save a new copy. Your original file remains unchanged.
Mac
- Control-click the Word file in Finder.
- Choose Open With → Pages, or open Pages and choose File → Open.
- Review missing-font and compatibility warnings before editing.
- Use Save to create an Pages copy, keeping the source file for comparison.
iPhone or iPad
- Install or update Pages from the App Store.
- In Files, Mail, or another document provider, tap the file and choose Open in Pages.
- Check the imported document before saving or sharing it.
Windows via iCloud.com
- Sign in to iCloud.com with an Apple Account and open Pages.
- Upload the Word file into the document manager.
- Open it, review warnings, and work on the new iCloud copy.
Compatibility checks
Complex page layouts, fields, tracked changes, macros, and unsupported Word features may change or be omitted. Fonts unavailable on the destination device can reflow text. Keep the original and compare important documents after import; do not assume pixel-perfect conversion.
Apple's current file conversion and compatibility guide documents the same Mac, mobile, and iCloud workflows and notes that the original remains intact.
