How to Open an Excel Spreadsheet in Apple Numbers
Apple Numbers can import Excel files (.xlsx and .xls) directly. This website does not generate an Numbers document. Open the original in Numbers, review any compatibility warnings, then save a new copy. Your original file remains unchanged.
Mac
- Control-click the Excel file in Finder.
- Choose Open With → Numbers, or open Numbers and choose File → Open.
- Review missing-font and compatibility warnings before editing.
- Use Save to create an Numbers copy, keeping the source file for comparison.
iPhone or iPad
- Install or update Numbers from the App Store.
- In Files, Mail, or another document provider, tap the file and choose Open in Numbers.
- Check the imported document before saving or sharing it.
Windows via iCloud.com
- Sign in to iCloud.com with an Apple Account and open Numbers.
- Upload the Excel file into the document manager.
- Open it, review warnings, and work on the new iCloud copy.
Compatibility checks
Unsupported Excel formulas, VBA macros, external data connections, charts, and pivot features may change, become static, or require repair. Fonts unavailable on the destination device can reflow text. Keep the original and compare important documents after import; do not assume pixel-perfect conversion.
Apple's current file conversion and compatibility guide documents the same Mac, mobile, and iCloud workflows and notes that the original remains intact.
